Old K-Pop: 서른즈음에 (At Around Thirty, 1994) by Kim Kwang Seok

The music of Korean singer-songwriter Kim Kwang Seok (1964~1996) is something that I still enjoy listening even today.  His folk songs were made and performed when I was little and I have no memory of watching him on TV as he died young at the age of 31 (which is my Korean age as of 2015).

I recently had my 30th birthday (on global standard) and I felt like listening to this song again.  Before coming to Korea in December 2014 I was still a 29 years-old but here in Korea I suddenly became a 31 years-old which made me feel like I lost the entire year.  Turning thirty is quite a big deal in Korea as well and this song makes me think about my past decade as well as the decade to come.  Hopefully it’s going to be a good one.

Another day gets further away
like cigarette smoke exhaled
In my memory so tiny
What am I filling it with

It gets farther away
Thought the youth was here to stay
But as my heart becomes emptier
I can’t find anything anymore

The seasons come back
But what about my love long lost
Its not like I let her go
Its not like I left her

I’m forgetting it bit by bit
Thought the love was here to stay
Another day gets further away
I’m saying farewell everyday
I’m saying farewell everyday

It gets farther
Thought the youth was here to stay
But as my heart becomes emptier
I can’t find anything anymore

The seasons come back
But what about my love long lost
Its not like I let her go
Its not like I left her

I’m forgetting it bit by bit
Thought the love was here to stay
Another day gets further away
I live saying farewell everyday
I live saying farewell everyday
